National Non-Smoking Week

National Non-Smoking Week

National Non-Smoking Week (NNSW) is the third week of January.

The Canadian Council for Tobacco Control established NNSW in 1977, as a public education event.

The week focuses on controlling tobacco use in Canada. Each year, Canadians take part in various NNSW events. The events are sponsored by federal, provincial/territorial, regional and local health and anti-smoking authorities.

Each year the Department of Health sends funds to each of Nunavut's communities to support activities and events for the NNSW and also for the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). This funding supports each community to:

  • educate Nunavummiut about the dangers of smoking;
  • prevent people who do not smoke from beginning to smoke;
  • help people quit smoking;
  • promote the right to breathe smoke-free air;
  • raise awareness of the tobacco industry, tobacco industry marketing practices, tobacco products, and tobacco use; and
  • help to achieve a smoke-free territory
